Over a decade ago a Black librettist brought Malcolm X's life to the opera stage. NY critics attacked the assassinated leader's politics and branded him as anti-Semitic. The opera tanked.
But I fully expect this opera will be embraced by NY's critics.
That librettist, BTW, was Thulani Davis, a onetime Village Voice writer.
