Two lawyers fail to help an innocent man because he didn't retain their services

I didn't see anywhere in the article that they failed to help an innocent man because he didn't retain their services; they were bound by the attorney-client rules not to reveal the information. That said, it's a travesty that Hope had to spend 26 years in prison when there was information to free him. Surely, there should be some kind of legal loophole to release this kind of information when an innocent man is imprisoned.

Richard Kling, the attorney for Hope who has been seeking to prove Hope is innocent, likely will oppose any statement that could be used against his client. But he also said, "I admire Jamie Kunz and Dale Coventry for coming forward as soon as they were able with a document showing that the wrong man was convicted."

Attorney-client privilege attaches to the one being represented, in this case the deceased. You're correct that the article doesn't explicitly say this, but it's because the decedent had their services that their hands were tied in this matter. But I agree that there has to be a better way than to let someone suffer unjustly only because your client is still living.
